First Impressions

Each month, we share books with BookBrowse members to read and review. Here are their opinions on two recently released titles.

The Possession of Alba Díaz by Isabel Cañas

“I loved Isabel Cañas's other two books, The Hacienda and Vampires of El Norte, but The Possession of Alba Díaz just became my favorite of the three. The story follows Alba and her family as they move to an isolated mine, where something dark latches onto Alba and won't let go. Alba is such a great character who feels real. She feels trapped by her family and the suffocating patriarchy of the 1700s. And then there's Elías. I didn't go into this book expecting such a lovely romance, but Alba and Elías are truly perfect. The Possession of Alba Díaz is a perfect combination of romance and horror, with all of the gore and terror one expects from a demonic possession story.” —Rachel

“Although speculative fiction is not my usual jam, there seemed to be something for everyone here—mystery, suspense, romance, religion, history, and horror—with several themes to make the book attractive to book clubs. I was especially interested in the details about silver mining, as well as Alba's desire, nay, passion, to keep control over her body.” —Linda S. (Waycross, GA)

The Possession of Alba Díaz will keep you on the edge of your chair reading long past your bedtime. It's a unique gem.” —Linda M. (Ocala, FL)

A Land So Wide by Erin A. Craig

A Land So Wide by New York Times best-selling author Erin A. Craig is the story of the Scottish settlement of Mistaken on the northeast Canadian coast, surrounded by ‘Warding Stones’ to protect the inhabitants from the shape-shifting, blood-drinking monsters, the Bright-Eyeds…Greer Mackenzie's desire to marry her long-time lover, Ellis Beaufort, is thwarted by her father, Hessel, who banishes Ellis to an almost certain death beyond the Warding Stones, and Greer sets off in search of her lover…The pace of the story quickly transitions from an interesting intrigue into a dramatic, page-turning frenzy of threats, danger, and unforeseen plot twists.” —John B. (Nashville, TN)

“I don't normally read the horror/fantasy genre, but I got absorbed in this book. Erin Craig creates a vivid picture with words (and a map for reference) of a harsh world beset by monsters and a young woman determined to leave and explore what lies beyond her confined borders. Because Craig is so descriptive and evocative in her writing, I could imagine the lands and the people.” —Rosemary C. (Golden, CO)

“The five-page prologue had me hooked…This is a book for readers that like fantasy and adventure. Book clubs will have a lot to discuss.” —Paula W. (East Wenatchee, WA)

Editor’s Choice

Ruth by Kate Riley

Kate Riley's excellent debut novel Ruth follows its eponymous heroine from her early childhood in the 1960s into wifehood, motherhood, and middle age in an Anabaptist community in Michigan. Riley doesn't explain all at once the rules or beliefs of Ruth's world; instead, the reader grasps the setting little by little, through snatches of Ruth's life that are, especially at first, devoid of larger context. As the book goes on and Ruth grows older, Ruth and the reader put together a fuller—although still constantly surprising—picture: the Dorf is a Hutterite colony in which "the Sermon on the Mount was their only charter, all goods were held in common" … continued
