Hello,
Move over, Mrs. Dalloway. This month, in conjunction with our coverage of Souvankham Thammavongsa's Pick a Color, we share a reading list of contemporary novels that take place over just one day.
You and your patrons can browse our YA section and categories for recommendations, updates, and sneak peeks at upcoming releases.
We also invite you to take advantage of our recent book club lists—the best books for book clubs in 2026 and recommended series for book clubs—and check out upcoming discussions and Ask the Author sessions in our community forum.
And be sure to brush up on November releases with our latest batch of previews!

Beyond the Book: Books That Take Place Over a Single DaySouvankham Thammavongsa's novel Pick a Color takes place over the span of one day at a nail salon, Susan's, owned by the main character Ning. This slice-of-life style of storytelling has been employed by numerous authors for different purposes—to heighten dramatic tension, to explore one character's daily reality, or to defy traditional narrative expectations. The latter two are certainly features of Pick a Color. Here are some other contemporary novels that also take place over the span of a day. |
